  • The amphicar Model 770 is an amphibious automobile which was launched at the 1961 New York Autoshow. It was made in West Germany and marketed from 1961 to 1968, with production ceasing in 1965.

    Designed by Hans Trippel, manufactured by the Quandt Group of West Berlin , with a total of 3,878 produced.

    The descendant of the Volkswagen Schwimmwagen , the amphicar only offered modest performance compared to most contemporary boats and cars . , featuring navigation lights and a flag mandated by the US Coast Guard .

    Its model 770 means cruising 7 knots in the water and cruising a top speed of 70 mph on land. It is equipped with a Triumph four cylinder , 1147 cc engine , rated at 43 hp.

    Former President Lyndon B Johnson owned a new , while he was President and would pull a prank on his friends and family. He would say to them , let's go for a ride in a new car and head directly to the lake and plunge into the water , scaring the heck out of his crew.

    With only a total of 3,878 produced in a 5 year period , there are believed to be only 500 survivors and less than 200 still seaworthy. In its time , was the only vehicle that could be registered as a boat and car in the U.S.
